SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES FROM CHILDHOOD!

“The basic idea behind sustainability is that we must act responsibly about the products we consume to support the billions of individuals on this planet forever.”

There are limited resources within the world that humans must extract from the very earth to fulfil their needs. Once we use the word sustainability to mean maintain, it means to take care of it forever. Our actions have an enduring effect on the environment and protect our future generations.

Sustainability means reaching out to our needs without compromising the flexibility of future generations to satisfy their needs. Embedded in most definitions of sustainability, we also find concerns for social equity and economic development.

Sustainability and Children

In this July edition, we introduce some simple steps of sustainable practices that can be implemented in children’s lifestyles. Simple steps like this will help them to know more about sustainability and also help them follow it.

The initial years of life are the building blocks that form the basics of our personality. The values and skills of a young child will become significant for shaping their adult attitude and behaviour. For that reason, the environment in which children grow up nurtures love, compassion, patience and other virtuous traits.

Talking about the sustainability topic with kids is incredibly important to try and do. However, it will be tricky to understand where to begin. First, we have to help our children to recognize what sustainability is. While a broad concept, sustainability impacts children that we’ve on the world and what we leave for future generations.

We know that sustainability can encompass several things, from gardening to recycling and in being resourceful with items and products that we use. We can covey this idea to our children through hands-on activities and involve them in acting sustainably!

Here are some practices or habits that can teach your child for making this planet green:

Separate waste at home

Sorting your waste to make sure you’re removing your trash, recyclables, and compostables properly may be an excellent spot, to begin with, sustainability in your home. Clearly label your receptacles and ask your kids about which items enter which bin!

Clean up your surroundings

Picking up just some pieces of trash in your neighbourhood can have an enormous impact! When walking around the block, surroundings or getting a group together to do an enormous cleanup, your family’s attempt can make that area cleaner and more beautiful for everyone.

Talk about the Three R’s

If your family is keen on living green, teaching children about “the three Rs” — reduce, reuse, and recycle — are often an excellent beginning for a sustainability discussion. Finding ways to cut back your waste, reuse things, and recycle helps introduce children to being environmentally conscious.

Start a sustainable storytime

Families can introduce stories about sustainability to their children. From saving lives to learning how to create less waste, looking for some children’s stories about living green could be a fun way to get your kids puzzling over sustainability. Always try to give the storybooks contented with sustainability pictures, themes etc.

Shop Locally

Did you recognize that purchasing groceries from your local farmers market can decrease congestion, reduce habitat loss, curb pollution, and more? In some Montessori curriculum, students can go to local farms and learn from local farmers. Plan a family trip to your local market with your kids — or maybe better, make shopping local from your nearby of your routine. It will help your kids study sustainable food production while getting the ingredients for a delicious meal!

Start a home garden

Everyone is enthusiastic about organic meals and gardening. If the family members are expert gardeners, starting a garden with a couple of small plants is a beautiful way to get your kids outside and learn to love nature.

Make your home greener

Making each day out of improving your home’s sustainability through simple upgrades — like changing your light bulbs to LEDs and implementing low-flow showerheads — are often an excellent family activity! Everyone can tell the kids about the switching off of lights and fans after the needs.

Start a conversation about saving water

Do your children turn the water on when they are brushing their teeth? Do they bother that how many litres of water getting lost when they are taking a bath? Always having conversations about saving water at home for kids is another excellent sustainability activity to try!

Talking to kids, explaining to them the invaluable nature of our resources, and safeguarding our environment is essential in cultivating a sustainable living standard from the earlier stages itself.
