ON THIS INDEPENDENCE DAY 2021: AUGUST 15TH

The month of August brings within the feeling of patriotism. Our Independence Day, which falls on 15th August, is one of the honoured occasions for every Indian. On this day, we reminisce our freedom fighters and brave soldiers, thanks to whom we live in a free country. Independence Day is additionally an event to reflect on what we do for our country as citizens.

The national tricolour flag waves high in the air marking the glory of today. India, being a secular country, is a place everyone wishes to measure in or visit. India is famous for its abundant natural wealth and can become a competitive ecotourism destination. There is also a great potential to develop ecotourism in India that ensures the socio-economic development of local communities while also conserving its biodiversity.

It is essential to keep the environment fit to keep ourselves and the nation healthy. With increasing population and pollution, it is vital that we grow more trees making India healthy and green. Plants help to keep the atmosphere clean and also provide us with food. More initiatives on creating fruit forests with the help of farmers, communities, organisations and private landowners will contribute to the self-sustainability of our nation both economically and health-wise. With expanding urbanisation leading to increased demand for space, trees are being cut down to make way. Hence it’s the combined responsibility of all public/private landowners to plant a minimum of one tree or more based on the availability of land. This simple step can make a huge difference to the environment and the inhabitants. Even having a small vegetable garden at home fetches you pure and fresh vegetables. Plants also purify the groundwater and improve the water retention capacity of the soil.

“Trees are my guru. They continue to give unconditionally, even when you pelt them with stones to take their fruit and even if you cut them down. Trees give life. Let’s reciprocate that. Plant more trees.” — APJ Abdul Kalam

Rather than seeing this Independence Day as a holiday, the kids and adults should get involved in such innovative programs and become active citizens. Trees are factually the source of life on this earth. They help preserve our surroundings by reducing the carbon footprint and also are liable for keeping the air fresh and clean.

Relating freedom to a deep-rooted tree with numerous branches shooting towards the sky is a liberating thought. Our roots are firmly connected to our diverse culture and the values we uphold as a nation. This Independence Day, let us take a vow of protecting the sacred trees that witnessed our fight for freedom 74 years ago and let us also plant healthy, native trees that will provide food and shade for the generations to come.
